Museum Replicas Great Helm
Original: England, before 1312
This
great helm was meant to be worn over an arming cap or padded mail coif. Worn like this, it would have afforded a great deal of protection to the knight.
The front and rear pieces are both riveted to a central strip of steel, with a small ring at the top to secure a crest or ribbon. The front of the helm is reinforced with a cross of steel, with a fleur-de-lis on each tip. The breath holes are also in the shape of a cross on each side. This helm is made of 18-gauge steel.
Unlike historical examples, this replica lacks the liner and/or suspension system that would make it easily wearable.
