Hello all,

this was a little project of mine that has been consuming me for a little while. I have always liked basket hilted sabers and the idea came across me once to try to merge a Japanese blade to a European basket. Well, a few weeks ago when I had acquired both, I put myself to the task. The result.

The blade is a Dynasty Forge 1060 Musha class katana. it is comparable to the Cold Steel Imperial variety of katanas that have a mirror polish and better overall finish. The sword was used in a very rigorous cutting exercise intended to take the katana to its limits, and it survived with a slight edge roll and several pin sized edge chips. Some judicious honing and polishing has removed any blade flaws. Picture 6 is where the edge damage used to be.

The blade is through hardened, and measures about 30 inches including the habaki. The basket is from an older model Atlanta Cutlery Basket Hilt which Stephen Han graciously donated for this project. The brass basket matches the brass habaki very well, that is the main reason I wanted a brass basket.

The grip is part of the tsuka core cut and shaped to fit in the basket. It has been wrapped with rayskin and sanded down. i ahd to use two pieces because I didn't have a single piece big enough. The grip is shimmed, epoxied, and pinned to the tang. The basket has had several epoxy applications to keep it from shifting since the tang isn't peened or threaded, it is held on like a Japanese katana tsuka (with the addition of epoxy).

The saya has been lacquered a dark green with a generous clear coat. The speckled finish emulates a malachite effect which was present on many nihonto. I lacquered, polished and buffed the saya myself, and the finish as you can see in the last picture is spectacular.

I have dubbed this a "Kago ken". Kago meaning "basket" in Japanese, and Ken of course meaning "blade". However it does have an interesting double meaning, Ken can also mean "fist" in Japanese depending on which Kanji symbols are used.

I am open to trades, but the reason I am selling this is to buy a Bushido Katana Wakizashi as a companion t a Bugei katana I mounted in Bushido fittings. So if you had a Bushido katana in great condition you want to trade, I'll also offer $125 with the "Kago Ken". otherwise I am asking $300 for it. I accept checks and money orders, Paypal takes a 3% fee. Shipping is on me however in the US. Insurance extra.

How can there be a perfect sword when PEOPLE come in all shapes and sizes too?

Still available, I am now asking $275 shipped for it. I have found a Bushido wakizashi and already bought it. If paid through paypal I will waive the 3% fee, just asking $275.
