I keep getting nagging recollections that somebody somewhere had published some research showing that the Dutch didn't really invent standardized weapon and formation drills for the Shot (musketeers, arquebusiers, calivermen, whatever) at the end of the 16th century since the Spanish already had such standard drills by the middle of the century. I can't remember if it was true or just my imagination, though, and damned if I know who that thesis came from. Gonzalez de Leon's The Road to Rocroi? Some earlier book of his? Or something else entirely? I really forgot where I was supposed to start looking for clues.

there`s a good synopsis about this context in ospreys pike and shot tactics"
http://www.amazon.com/Pike-Shot-Tactics-1590-...1846034698

there you can find a summary of the spanish drills, dutch, swedish, german (30years war) and english (civil war),
and how these styles evovled and influenced each other.

I need something a lot more detailed than that, though--preferably something with copious references to/quotations from primary sources.
