Hello
I'm new member of Industry Professionals and this is my premier post here.
Few months ago I finished special reconstruction of very special helmet (for me ) - spiky helmet from Groningen from 5-6th. cen.
I tryed to build all helmet (exept forging steel plates from bars....I used 1,5 mm steel plates (DC 1). )only by as primitive method as it's possible.
Some tools and methods I used has historical sources and some was my own invention. I know maybe not all is exactly like form 5-6th. cen. but it wasn't my cause.
It's my private experiment so, I changed some parameters of the helmet ...but just little bit.
I made it with cooperation of Poul Mortimer - he helped me always when I needed. Thanx Poul.
Mybe this helmet isn't "a piece of the Art " but I'm very proud of it
I'm interested waht's Your opinion about my work ....be as hard as it's nesesery

Hi Patryck,
It is a brilliant reproduction (the first I think) of a really important helmet.
Well done.

I did a google search for "Groningen helmet", but the only result that looks like it might have been useful was on Roman Army Talk, which apparently has had its account suspended. What's the history of this kind of helm?
Good work, as well.

Nice original. Is that the only one like it?
Also, Bill, what movie is your avatar from? It seems so familiar...

Both helmets are river bank finds with little context -- Mahand Vogt - who wrote the excellent book, Spangenhelme, believes that they are 5th to 6th century. One publication, 'Kings of the North Sea' (the catalogue of a travelling exhibition, 2000) puts the Groningen at 8th century - but it is possibly a typo. Certainly both helms have manufacturing techniques and stylistic attributes that seem to belong to the earlier period.
Perhaps we can convince Patryck that he should make the Brehmen helmet, too?
