Arms & Armor St. Maurice Broadsword
Original: Circa 1050-1120, Vienna, Weltliches Schatzkammer
The St. Maurice sword is a replica of the Coronation Sword of the Holy Roman Empire, XI.4 in
Oakeshott's Records of the Medieval Sword. This A&A version has a bronze pommel and cross, whereas the original is gilt iron. The grip is wire-wrapped. It has been suggested that due to the length of the blade on a single-handed sword, that this would have seen duty as a cavalry weapon in its fighting life.
The pommel is an Oakeshott Type B (a Brazil nut form) that is engraved with the "Arms of the Empire". On the opposing side, later A&A versions depict the personal Arms of Otto IV, a demi-eagle impaling three leopards—on this version, this side is blank. The cross is engraved with the words "
CHRISTUS VINCIT: CHRISTUS REINAT" on one side and "
CHRISTUS INPERAT" on the other, a common war-cry of the Third Crusade.
