Arms & Armor Nordland Axe
Original: Scandinavian, circa 8-11th centuries
Though this type of axe has been in use since the Roman Iron Age, the axe upon which this example is based was found in Northern/mid Norway around Trøndelag and Norland, and into Sweden, particularly the Gotland area. This is a Petersen Type C axe, due to the pronounced hanging beard. This is not only a weapon of war but also a practical utility piece used to chop wood while on campaign or on the farm.
This reproduction is of 6150 steel and is painted black. The stained hickory shaft of the axe has a slight flare at the end, a feature found on historical pieces that allows for a secure grip.
