|
|
I'm thinking of a more extensive revamp of my albion crecy (grip and full scabbard redo, as I grew unsatisfied with the one I posted in here a while ago).
Now I'm very interested in this picture posted by sean, as the blade appears to be a type XVI, still in use in a later period. It was no uncommon for a sword blade to be rehilted according to later fashion (it may also be a fuellered type XVIII...but it doesn't look that way on the picture below). The thing is, the hilt of the albion crecy is quiet typical of the XIV century with it's straight guard and round pommel, so my question is it would be appropriate to fit a leather rainguard on it? Of course I'll play around with photoshop to come up with a design, but at this stage I'm not even sure it would make sense.
Cheers,
J

There are both XVIa and XVa 14th century longswords with rainguards in the Records of the Medieval Sword, so I would say, why not?

You're right! I just checked and there are one example for each type (there isn't much left on the type XVIa to look at though but it's there for sure!). Now that raises the qustion of a 14 century scabbard to accomodate a rain guard. Now there are plenty of example for XV century longsword scabbards and rainguard, but I wonder what kind of suspensions and overall design that implies for a 100 years war sword...

A quick sketch of what it might look like. The shell pattern is one that is often seen in period art apparently, and it might work in this case.
let me know what you think.

Well, simply put: much better
I based the drawing on picture 1, yours is closer to picture 2 and looking at it it seems a better fit (not to mention that a leather rain guard might deform over such a large scale)

I think its a very good idea to add an rainguard to the sword.
Its almost never added to modern swords (inluding most Albions) but seems to be rather common on later medievel swords, perhaps even in majority.
This should be done more often! The problem is perhaps that this feature does not really correspond with what we think a sword should look like.
Go for it!
