I am thinking of picling one up for a conversion project to make an early ribbon-hilt. Has anyone purchased this blade? Any impressions? Does the basket curve like a traditional basket-hilt or is it more open accomodating the cutlass concept? I would really appreciate the feed-back.

I thought that the scottish cutlass looked interesting, until I saw one at the Museum Replicas store. I am not sure what you mean by "...curve like a traditional basket-hilt...", but I will give you my impressions. The basket seemed quite large, IMO, and the shape of the basket, when viewed from the "rear" (i.e., in common terminology, the opening where you put your hand) is basically circular. So, not at all like a historical basket-hilt, and I was turned off.

That's exactly the impression I got from the pictures on the MRL website, Steve. It looks nice in pictures but when you begin to notice little things like the shape of the basket, it definitly is a turn off. Thanks for confirming my misgivings.
