As a fan of the dutch heterogenic armour-style this was a real treat to see. Great project.

Quote from article; "The ammunition of the heroes of the Middle Ages, created by the artist in Holland, became a landmark in Gotscha Lagidse’s work. For 10 years the Royal Netherlands Army Museum (Legermuseum) in the city of Delft was unsuccessfully looking for an artist who would be capable of making a copy of the armour of a national hero of the 16th-17th centuries – Maurice of Orange (1567-1625), the Count of Nassau and it was to our countryman – Gotscha Lagidse, that the specialists entrusted this responsible task. Creating a western knight’s armour has been Gotscha’s dream for a very long time."

Looks wonderful to my untrained eye.

Can't read any of it though.

This is the text run thought a translation-program. Its a mix between very informative/interesting and totally hilarious.....

"The picture for and of Jan van Schaffelaar a monument, has been manufactured for veluws museum Nairac, department culture of the municipality Barneveld, for which in 1998, the first plans were made. The task to artist Gotscha entrusted Lagidse. As an example harnasmodel have been chosen the harnas that on the painting Saint Joris and the dragon of Frederich Herlin (1462) stand represented.

A action of friendship

In the Dutch history the period of approximately 1350 stands until the end of the 15de centuries confessed as the time of Hoekse and Kabeljauwse argue. Both parties existed from frequently changing groups of edelen and cities in the Netherlands and sea country. David of Burgundy, zoon of Filips good, were bis hops of Utrecht. By the Hoekse town governing board he was dissipated from its city. Kabeljauwse troops besieged then Utrecht to starve the population from. Jan II of kleef sent food transports to the duke loyal to Utrecht to help the besieged city. Troops of the bishop got then the task these transports to intercept. Also rider leader Jan van Schaffelaar, belonged for that purpose.

In a chronicle from 1698 concerning Jan van Schaffelaar it is as follows mentioned:

On 16 July 1482 the Kabeljauwse had riders, originating Roozendaal, the toren and the church of Barneveld taken, Hoekse soldiers from amersfoort and Nijkerk besieged the church. They had guns at itself with which they shot by the toren. Four or five bezetters came for living. The men on the toren offered to itself to deliver but entered that of amersfoort on this not. They wanted that certain Jan van Schaffelaar from the galmgaten be thrown down. The men on the toren savages that do not do. Then Jan "kind gezellen said van Schaffelaar, I must die nevertheless once, I want provide no difficulties you". He will stand on top of tinnen of the toren, put its hands in its side and jumped down. He survived its fall but was killed by its enemies.

Until now the action of Jan van Schaffelaar current is. The event has always very spoken to the imagination of people. Its many books, Article and poems written, many artists have been inspired by this action of Jan van Schaffelaar and this way a lot of paintings, drawings and sculpturen have arisen.

Jan van Schaffelaar harnas

Veluws museum Nairac, compared with the toren, wide 500 years later, presents van Schaffelaar as in its basisexpositie Jan a Dutch hero. There had been arranged in the expositie none harnas from the time of Van Schaffelaar present is. From a historical chronicle becomes clear that Jan have carried a complete harnas: Van Schaffelaar with nineteen riders; its behaviour as a man of authority; he carries a closed helmet and has been girded entirely. There are no other concrete data concerning its harnas is confessed.

Task of the veluws museum "Nairac" and municipality Barneveld

In the year 1999 Gotscha have been approached a harnas "for" Jan create van Schaffelaar. In consultation between Priscilla of lions of the museum Nairac and lord Puype of the army museum has been chosen traditionally Gothic harnasmodel that on the painting Saint Joris and the dragon of Frederich Herlin from 1462 stands represented. Harnasmodel shown on painting then it was theoretically possible in complete Europe popular and for this reason is, which Jan van Schaffelaar that model has carried harnas. Project whole has been completed on 27 March 2004 and as from 12 May are Jan van Schaffelaar see in the museum Nairac. More than 2000 hour has been worked for the harnas.

Speech Gotscha on 12 May 2004 in veluws museum Nairac - revealing of the harnas.

Jan van Schaffelaar are a symbol national of opofferingsgezindheid because of friendship. He wants its gezellen release of a diabolic dilemma and jumped himself of the church kerktoren of Barneveld. Still this jump to imagination speaks. So much even that museum clears Nairac 500 years later the memory to this volksheld living wants keep picture and harnas by recreating Jan's. About this in 1999, with me the first conversations have been held. Who am I? Gotscha Lagidse, from Georgia originating an artist, itself specialized in harnassen and wapenuitrustingen. In 1994, I have come to the Netherlands and a residence permit have been got because of substantial contribution to the Dutch cultural importance. The definite task for this picture of Jan van Schaffelaar got I in 2003.

There are no truthful images of Jan van Schaffelaar, precise descriptions also no of its weapon equipment. As a basis for this picture has served a painting of Frederik Herlin from 1460 on which these Saint represents Joris and the dragon. The choice for this painting is ambiguous: it shows to then popular, veelgedragen traditionally Gothic harnas, possibly also Jan van Schaffelaar behave. And further offered to the painting me inspiration for discovery of the person Jan van Schaffelaar.

This harnas is herschepping. Making there was not easy, yes sometimes even heavy. Approximately 2000 hour I have been possible work for Jan van Schaffelaar, inspired by its opofferingsgezindheid. I am proud on the final result which stands here for you. And the chance gratefully for ordered this picture for you be allowed make. Ik it as an honour to experience has been possible make this picture for you. And hope that you will look back exactly as satisfied on this task as I. I want thank some people in particular for the indispensable support: Priscilla of lions, lord Puype and Anton of of of the army museum digs, Mr. Piet the Gryse of the royal museum of the army and the Krijgsgeschiedenis in Brussels."
