Hello folks,
In an earlier post ,I was asked about some more pictures of a sallet that I made a while back., and which I use as my avatar.Well for those of you who like this sort of thing here are a few more.......................
It was a heavy beastie, some 13.5 lbs ( 6.3 kg ),in total ! and was at the customers request, made entirely out if 14swg steel. The removable crest features a plume holder in the centre ,and was copied from a drawing in the 'Beauchamp Chronicles',circa 1485. The lock to hold the visor in the open position was also added at the customers request, and would not normally have been present on helmets at this period.
Hope that you like it,I certainly enjoyed making it !
Best wishes ,
Russ

Russ,
that is a gorgeous helmet. Your rolled edges are beautiful, I can never seem to get them that exact and smooth with a hammer. I bet that is a joy to wear and use. Thank you for sharing.

Thankyou for the kind words gentlemen,it seems that most people like this helmet As regards to wearing it,my only problem with it (not that I actually have to do so ! ),is its great weight .The sallet alone weighing around 10 1/2 lbs (4.7 kg ),which is rather heavy, the heaviest that I have an actual weight for is an example in the Wallace Collection, London, that weighs just on 8 lbs ( 3.6 kg ),and many examples do not even weigh that much. However, that was what the customer wanted as he takes part in jousting tournaments.Thankfully he likes it ,as he has now ordered a raised ,one piece, example from me as well !
Best wishes as ever,
Russ
