Does anyone know if these are available online?

If so please post a link.

Cheers.

Hi Martin,

I think the easiest way to get the Peniquick sketches would be to buy Withess to Rebellion

Good luck!

Please pardon my ignorance, but, what are the Penicuik drawings. I did a Google search, and turned up a town in Scotland by that name, but that is pretty much it.

Okay so I'm not the only one that hadn't a clue! I too would like to know what you gentlemen are talking about.

Witness To Rebellion
The Penicuik Sketches
An unknown artist near Penicuik (just outside Edinburgh) did a series of remarkable sketches of both the Government militia prior to the Jacobite arrival, the Jacobite occupation 1745-6, and the Government troops (particularly the Hessians!) which arrived later. These are the only known contemporary illustrations taken during the ’45 itself, and of the 29 illustrations of Highland troops, 17 are shown carrying broadswords of various descriptions (including two with curved Turkish blades), 10 are with muskets, and 2 with Lochaber Axes.

The drawings are mentioned in our article The Paper Armoury: Scotland the Brave. I found this using the myArmoury.com Search Function.

The Penicuik drawings are sketches depicting military dress, highland fight stances, and the like from the '45.

Doing a google search, I found many hits on this.

As mentioned, the book Withess to Rebellion is likely the best source for these, but they are also scattered about in other titles including Highlander: Fearless Celtic Warriors.

Hi,

I would like to add that the ones shown in Highlander: Fearless Celtic Warriors are reproductions made by the author, Stuart Reid, and are not very good. Reid uses these sketches over and over in his books on the 45'. You can see better reproductions of the Peniquick Sketches in Highland Swordsmanship.

Cheers,
Henrik
