Please pardon me if this subject has been addressed previously.

I purchased a suit of 16th century Italian style round armour from Valentine Armouries a few months ago and would like to "dull" its mirrored finish to create a more authentic appearance.

I have experience with the salt/vinegar technique (which is very effective), but would like a less time intensive procedure. There is a lot of surface area to cover and I don't have the proper work environment to remove massive amounts of rust.

Can anyone recommend a product or technique? The armour is mild steel that has not been treated or coated with any protective products.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Don't quote me on this, but this is what *I* would do. No promises that it will give the results you want Happy

I would buy a box of grey Scotchbright pads and sand it "down" until you get the finish you want. Make sure you go in all kinds of random directions. You'll get a more "grey" satin finish than the mirror polish and a lot of imperfections, where any exist, will disappear due to blending.

Thanks for the advice!

Do you think steel wool would work (#000 or #0000)?
