Just saw a Discovery Civilization show called "Battlefield Detectives - Who got lucky at hastings" and the historical punschline of the show was that the outcome of the Battle of Hastings was that Harold died first, had William died first the force loyal to Harold would had won.

Well, now the Williams side won.

But... If Harold had kept his crown and secured his rule how would the western world had looked the following decennia? Or even today?

Intressting speculation I think. Didn´t Prof. J.R.R. Tolkien mould some of his ethnic group on this fantasy? What is your outtake on it?

I have a sneaking suspicion possibly not all that different, although modern English may have sounded different because of less Norman French influence. AFAIK by the time of Edward the confessor England was coming under a strong continental influence anyway.

I think a parallel would be the evolution of Scandinavia after 1066, the Scandinavian countries put the "viking period" behind them and ended up being quite similar to the rest of Western Europe with a feudal nobility, mounted men-at-arms etc.

On the other hand I suspect that the history of France might have been very different as they would not have had Anglo-Norman armies with a claim on French territory rampaging all over the place.

Maybe I'd be able to understand English without having to learn all these Latin words. No Normans - no Romanic language influence. At least that's my theory Blush

As for history: hard to see the future is even with the force as an ally, a powerful ally it is Wink
