I have found at least two references to historical sites in Scotland owning a dirk suposedly owned by the notorious Rob Roy McGregor, however I could not find an illustration. Does anyone have a picture or good line drawing of this dirk. Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
I'm pretty sure I've seen a picture of it. And I bet Thomas MacDonald has a picture of it lying about!
Cheers,

The only image I've seen of the purported dirk of Rob Roy is of its handle (alongside his sporran) in Fitzroy MacLean, "Highlanders; A History of the Highland Clans" .

Theres the illustration of him. Of course this was coppied from Richard Waite's painting of Alasdair Grant the Champion so there may be no basis at all but it's a source.

The two sources shown here made me think Rob Roy either had a sgian achlais or a whinger.

Here's the Rob Roy portrait Allen mentioned.
Like he said it looks like a copy of the Waite portrait of Alasdair Grant.
And here is a picture of a "whinger":

Thanks to everyone who answered my original inquiry regarding Roy Rob MacGregor's dirk which is suppose to be in either the Walter Scott or Argyll collections (or both or neither, who knows for sure!). I would like to pick your collective brains a step further. Since only the handle is extant.- and that is hard to make out! - would anyone be willing to guess what the dirk grip material is? Or how it may have been configured with pommel, etc.? I know the blade will just be conjecture, but any thoughts on the configuration of the grip, pommel cap, etc. would be appreciated. BTW, it is my plan to have a reproduction made if I can get enough information to make some educated gusses. Thanks to all. George Osborne
