Hello all:

In a similar vein to my last question...I have been looking for a good online resource to Medieval effigies, however, I cannot seem to find a good central loaction that lists them. I have tried English Heritage, various county archaeological Monument Records, etc... but I am having a hard time finding a good source.

Any ideas where I might look?

By the way, I found this picture of an effigy of a Sir Hugh FiztHenry in predominantly mail armour (http://www.c-parr.freeserve.co.uk/Romaldkirk/church.htm)...but it is hard to see very well. Does any one have better pics of this monument?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Martin,

My data is pretty sparce as far as online sources, but here are a couple. They seem to have maybe one or two pcs at best.

vrcoll.fa.pitt.edu/.../ London-Temple-Church.html
www.ceu.hu/medstud/manual/ SRM/herself.htm
http://www.marsdenarchive.com/library/section...l+Effigies (a very unusual but interesting site IMHO)

Hope this helps!

Hello Martin

There realy is nothing like you are describing. There are some books that deal with the subject and I know of two studies that are in the works. One is pretty comprehensive of the English examples and from what I gather is a year at least from any type of access. The other was a reference in conversation to a german study that identifed some armor styles but that is all I have ever heard of this one.

There's not much on line i'm aware of . Alot of current and out of print books on armour feature effigies when dealing
with the 12th-early 15th century but your looking at perhaps 1/2 a dozen per text at most .
