Wow, great pictures! I loved all the costumes, not just the armour!

Hi Chuck......I'm not with these guys....they're Russians....... so cool those Russians.....and they have heaps of re-enactment groups, fascinating Armour and lots of weapons. Our chief just posted the link on our group-site and I was blown away by the shots ( me being a phtographer and all) ...and I got real excited and wacked it in here.
Yes, they seem to mix & match a bit. But some of the shots are just great...you just gotta dig them out a bit ! See.....

Looks like those Russians take their fun seriously. While there does seem to be some mixing of time periods (of course, I don't know much about armor, anyway), it is still very impressive to see all of those folks out on the 'battle field', almost takes you back in time.

As far as I gathat, reenactment/living history has gone through quite a boost in eastern europe after the fall of Communism. "New" nations, reexploring history, and all that.
I haven't met any of the medevial russians, but a couple of the viking people. They generally look quite good, and have a rep for playing hard. Their style is more like Heavy Fighting with steel than the light "tappy tappy, safety first" approach used in west european mass combat...
Wich, again, means that they have lots of, and good armour.
Would be real nice to meet some of them sometime...

At various times during my internet perambulations I have come across photos of Russian re-enactment groups that specialise in the mid-13th century (i.e. the "Alexander Nevski Period"). Russians really do seem to take re-enactment very seriously.
Judging by David Nicolle's Osprey books about Russian armies, some Late Medieval Russian armies wore a real mixture of Western European and Oriental armours, that could partially account for the mixture of styles seen in those photos.

Hey Chuck.......
Europe ? Well I know that there are very many hundreds of re-enactment groups around the world just in the "medieval" catagory alone ! None are like the SCA...they are unique. My city has around 23 individual medieval & Viking groups and thats not counting the SCA. I have 185 re-enactment groups saved in my 'favoutites' list in explorer, and they are strictly what I conside to be very authentic and interresting groups with good arms, armour and the photo-gallery to prove it. We just keep finding groups that are better and better.....theres this German / Polish group.....they do movies and stuff, and oh man you wanna see 'em......Vikings, and not the kind that your sister would want to take home to Momma......oh, here they are.....I just found em'............ http://www.ulfhednar.org/ ....... and then there's the Scottish group "The Clann" again they do movies etc, but they are still just a club, albeit a very good one...........
http://www.the-clann.co.uk/index.shtml ...the photos here are simply amazing...... in fact these two groups have the best photos that I've seen in over four years of research on-line. ........enjoy !

Yeah, the photos are great and visual appearance is good, but... I wouldn't say that they are the top notch regarding historical authencity. I don't know a lot about the history of Scotland (actually nothing), but I still would think that not many scotsmen would be wearing a kilt and a viking helm and swinging a twohanded claymore at the same time. Someone who knows more could tell better.
EDIT: Oh, and I've seen some of those russian groups. The first thing they did when they came to the place of their "battle show" was that they asked where the nearest hospital was... So, yeah the stuff they do is dangerous.

SCA isn't that big in europe; For instance, there is no SCA in norway at all. There is in Sweden, though.
It's real interesting to see all the different approaches to historical fighting... (Elling, sociology master student... :P )
My Krew... The pictures are from various training events...

This group i believe were involved in being the Scottish 'Army' who re-enacted Bannockburn on the pitch at Murrayfield before the recent Scotland vs England rugby match. Which the Scots deservedly won.
However, the re-enactment was extremely unfair as the English did not seem to have been invited

Cpt. Darling - "You look surprised, Blackadder."
Edmund - "I cerainly am, sir. I didn't realise we had any battle plans."

Thanks.
Since I live in the western part of norway, we don't have that much snow most of the time. The "snowy" pictures are from a large (70-80 people) gathering in eastern norway. Always great fun going there, and play around in the snow.
We also get to meet people from far away, and kill them.
The bigest gathering I'we been to was Mousgard...A viking market, with about 240 fighters. There are reputedly larger ones in poland. As mentioned, reenactent seems to be "big" in eastern europe.

Good afternoon. I'm a member of one russian re-enactment group. To support your discussion I'd like to add, that the fact we use steel weapons doesn't make our fights extremely dangerous. But it makes them more exciting. We have only one negative result of these rules - it's that we have to fix our armour after every festival )))
