Just a tid bit. Having coffee this AM and re-reading one of my old books.

There is a reference and a picture. A copy of a portrait of...

Sir Niall O'Neill. 2nd Baron of Killeleagh. Lord Lt. of Ireland d. Battle of the Boyne 1690. There are two portraits, done in 1680 one by J.M. Write in the Tate Gallery. Wherever that is? The other is similar and is in the possession of the Sutherland Lairds at Dunrobin Castle, Scotland.

It appears, as best I can tell that there is some type of armor in the lower left hand side of the picture. Is it scale/lamellar or what? It almost looks Japanese in style!! Or....do I need to go see the eye doc?!

Can anyone, does anyone; have a better picture of this? Or better yet actually seen the Dunrobin Castle painting in person? Mac?

Thanks.

It is, in fact, a Japanese armour. Here's the full portrait and a discussion of the armour (be sure to read the detailed articles Mac attached as well):
