Mac, ElJay,
Another question for you guys. How common was it for the French to carry these? This is the 2nd example I've seen.
Description from Ebay...
"Although non-regulation, this beautiful 18th Century Scotish Basket Hilt Sword is most likely of French manufacture . Recorded to have been in service is several French regiments and marked along the spine "CLEMENT CE PIERRY (?) KULLER MARCHAND A SOLINGEN". The outstanding basket hilt also wears the maker's stamp on the inside front. Original fishskin wrapped hilt still wears it's original twisted wire, however, only remnants of the inside red fabric liner remain. The blade measures 32 3/8 inches in length and remains in excellent condition with nice engravings still visible on either side. Overall measuring 38 3/4 inches in length. Truly a rare find! (please note other items shown as props are not included in this auction)"

Hi Stephen
Thanks to Eljay I've been watching that one ( I believe he's bidding on it , or will be !) , and it's a beauty !
( I wish I had the funds to go after it , too, but alas my $nowplowing winter is not cooperating with my toy schedule :-(
Eljay sent me these pages , from the Auld Alliance, which discusses these French/Scot baskethilts ......
