Whats up guys and ladies? I decided last month to alternate between my historical garb and am together a ranger like costume for faires. I'm looking for a churchwarden pipe. Wood is preferable but clay would be considered. I've found some but for what I'll be using it for, they were a little too high. I am looking for a smokable pipe for around 20 bucks. Thanks.

If you roughly double your budget price (go up to $45 U.S.) , you should be able to find some well designed Savinelli wooden Churchill style pipes. I would go with a shorter 12" model with a gradual bend if you want to stay practical in terms of cleaning and convienience of use/ transport. If you can, check the pipe with a churchwarden style cleaner to see that the cleaner can easily pass through. Some individual (not necessarily true of every pipe of the same model) pipes are a real pain, and I would not buy them. A real pipe shop may have some pipes that would pass for this style in a clearance or "seconds" sale basket at a price closer to $30.00

Clay Churchwardens are going to cost at least $30, and are historically accurate for earlier pipes. I have had one and knew a couple others who did too. All of these clay pipes ended up broken relatively quickly. Purchasing a case can reduce this problem, but then you have a lot of money tied up in the case. A Meerschaum bowl with a modern stem would be a good compromise, but this would break your budget.

Nice churchwardens, although they may be to LotR inspired for some people. Wink

I got one of their Strider pipes, great pipe, with a real nice look to it!

I have a MacQueen Strider pipe, and I'm definitely happy with it, both in the way it looks and the way it smokes. It didn't take long to break in, and the fairly broad bowl makes it pretty easy to keep clean.
MacQueen is also the only company I know of (there may be others) that makes all-wood pipes, as opposed to briar bowl with an acrylic stem.

I've found a pipe on ebay thats about what I like. However, its cedar. This is a question for you pipe veterens. Would the cedar scent not interfere with the flavor of the tobacco? Thanks

I ordered a MacQueen Strider yesterday. Although it was over my budget. Every time I looked at it I liked it more. Thanks for the help guys.
