The punchline: It's all polycarbonate! Very inexpensive though, and available in a variety of finishes. Lots of different periods and styles, a few of which are shown below. For reference, the spangenhelm is about $150. The 16th c. breast (almost identical to a famous piece in Graz) is around $200. The gothic cuirass is tougher to justify at $500. Still, it looks great and is certainly cheaper than a real cuirass of that quality. The sallet is around $200. That, too, is a bit hard to justify since a real sallet can be found for not much more. Interesting idea and nice execution. Maybe nobody will want this stuff and it'll end up in the bargain basement bin. See it all here:

I've seen those when I browse BTS occasionally. Very pretty, very detailed, but I'd prefer something that's actual steel or leather.

I would have to agree with that.They still look very good though. They would be ideal for movies and plays etc.

The old cliche about great minds applies here, since I've thought the very same thing. One of the biggest points in their favor is that they can probably be quickly mass-produced.

This stuff would be great for LRP - which is precisely what it was made for - latex and foam weapons, some historical, some fantasy... Yet another neat toy I never had as a kid.
For comparison, though, this might not be as inexpensive as you might think...

This hybrid polyurethane stuff is also available directly thru Norton Armories. They are prop suppliers for such recent films as Troy, King Arthur and Kingdom of Heaven. Norton Armories claims that this stuff is so strong you can run it over with a 1.5 ton truck and the armor will spring back into shape. Although I would advise wearing it while doing it.

umm most larps do not except the stuff. dagorhir, dagger, adrian blah blah must have steel chain or leather.

Yes it will stand up to fighting with metal weapons, we can thicken the material if required for added protection.
Interesting. Maybe it's an alternative for metal armor, which needs lots of maintenance under heavy use.
(gotta admit I sorta like the Troll armor. Sparring while wearing that might be fun. Sue me. )

True, though a lot of local groups have begun to selectively allow this stuff - the reason I was given for no plastics was that many people were making their own (and generally with horriffic aesthetic results). A second reason was that they could splinter or crack, making a dangerous situation in that people could get cut or stabbed with shards. If I were running a game and had a chance to review this stuff, I'd personally probably allow it... if anyone could actually afford it.

Heh... want company? Could be fun. I'm still kind of thinking I want a steel lid, though... even if this stuff is effectively bulletproof.

I can't believe that 16th c. breast/back/tassets is just $240 (plain, though-not as shown)! Even the $400 or so for the item as pictured seems like a fantastic bargain. I've been wanting exactly this to display with my burgonet. Mmmmm..... |

customized with an exchange barred visor, roped edges on the peascod, tassets, and helm... stepping on the peascod and tassets... plume tube...
Oh, and hey... Scott's taking orders with delivery dates starting in March...

Somehow I doubt they'd send ME test items but I'll see if I can talk the Fechtmeister into it.
A high profile person like a myArmoury.com Team Member might very well have a better chance though. ***hint***

I love the crisp lines on that sallet!
The pen is mightier than the sword, especially since it can get past security and be stabbed it into a jugular.
This site would be better if everytime I clicked submit... I got to hear a whip crack!
