Hi

Any good printed resource out there on medieval axes (typology/evolution/making) ? I have a hard time finding anything really useful, but maybe I am just not searching hard enough....

Thanks

there is some stuff out there regarding the viking axe types. If memory serves me right, one of the Osprey Viking books did at least list the various types. I'd like to see some more info on the subject as well, especially about the axes of the high middle ages.

Fabrice,

Are you looking for information on a specific time when axes were used, or the general history of the ax as a weapon of war? One suggestion here that might get you started:

Dark Age warrior /
R Ewart Oakeshott

1984, 1974
English Book 135 p. : ill., map ; 22 cm.
Chester Springs, Pa. : Dufour Editions, ; ISBN: 080231273X :
Describes the weapons and armor used by soldiers during the four-hundred-year period of invasions, wars, migrations, and unrest in Europe that followed the break-up of the stable patterns of the Roman Empire.

I may have a short list for you a little later. What languages can you read? Not all the sources I find are in English.

Cheers!

Hi Carl

Thanks

I am searching for very specific information on the evolution and chrono-typology of axes in a period ranging from the fall of Rome to the XVth century.

I can read French (obviously), English (reasonably), Italian, Spanish, German (could improve, though)

Cheers
