All the original viking swords I have seen have looked black and rather lumpy. Now, I know that the elements are hard on these things, but are there any that survive and look 'as they did' in the old days?

One of the best preserved swords of the Viking age is probably one found in the River Witham, London. It's now housed in the British Museum. As far as I know there are none that survive in pristine condition.

There's a photo of it in this review: http://www.myArmoury.com/review_alb_jarl.html

There has been some recent findings of "viking" swords in the Fjäll (scandinavian mountains) that is said to be very well preserved. I will have a look at them this summer, hopefulley I can post some pictures of them later. I´ll keep you posted...
