I showed the picture to my wife (who happens to be Japanese). She said the writing is either really old Japanese or it is Chinese. Either way she can't read it. This makes sense in some ways. The Japanese did not develop their own writing system. They started using Chinese (kanji) characters in the the 5th or 6th century. Before the Japanese language was worked into the writing system they used to write in Chinese.
