Einar Drønnesund recomended this forum so I am a newcommer and would like to introduce myself.

I am curently trying to finish my MA thesis in archaeology at the Museum of Science and Archaeology, University of Trondheim. The thesis is about iron production and blacksmithing 600-1300 AD in the midle part of Norway. (It's normaly two year work to research and write, but most of us use a bit longer..) My main source material is examined iron producing sites dated to this period and graves with blacksmith tools. I try to examine the social possition of the blacksmiths and if there maybe existed different groups with different status, maybe in different geografical aeras (coastal districts and innland areas). Most iron was produced in the innland but most graves with blacksmith tools is located in the costal district etc...
In archaeological fieldwork I am specialy interessted in sites located in un-cultivated land in the mountan and forest regions of Norway, maynly iron pruduction sites and charcoal production pits. Last year I had the pleasure to lead an excavation of a ironworking site propably dated to viking og early medieval period (i am waiting for the results of the radiocarbon samples).

I am personaly very interested i blacksmithing and do some myself in my spare time (though I do not have the time to do it as often as i would like...). I am thus extremly interested in the production thechniques for varoius historical and prehistorical tools and weapons, preferably the early and late germanic iron age 500 BC to AD 1000.

(if someone wonders about may last name it's because i am half french...)

sincerly
