I am collecting 19th century British Cavalry sabers. Some of them have grips that are in good shape but the shagreen is beginning to deteriorate. Other than a gentle brushing with a soft brush, do any of you have any advice on cleaning and/or conserving the shagreen? I am mainly concerned with drying, cracking. Thanks.

I have -heard- that some folks use plain cod liver oil, because it's a natural product. Once again, I say---I have *heard* that. I have no personal experience in the matter, so take that with a grain of salt and for what it's worth. I guess I could see it working...if you don't mind your sword smelling a bit....fishy. .......McM
