HI All,

Here are a pair of ostensibly identical Windlass bows, one a commission and the other available. These are based after 15thC munition examples form Western Europe, so basically fairly boring in form.

They follow the usual outline for my bows, so the stock is ash, the fittings are steel, the trigger is sprung and the string is linen.

My bow scale is out of action, but getting rebuilt, so not sure on the weight yet, but they certainly shoot very nicely and I will update as soon as I can.

I hope you like them and any comments or questions are very welcome.

I always wanted a windlass bow.
Looks like I may have to buy a crossbow.

Great work Tod, you've just about converted me to loving crossbows. Not that I didn't like them I just didn't know much. After looking at most of your vids and read most of your crossbow pages on your website, I'm really amazed by your work. Nice!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the compliments.

I have just weighed these bows and one comes out at 865lbs and the other at 976lbs.

The 865lbs is currently available (11 Sept 2017)

Superb work as always! Would you mind giving some info about the strings? Are they simply endless loop and then heavily served, or is there some magic involved that can't be seen from the outside?

I've recently been playing with linen strings on my heavier longbows (up to about 150lb) and getting linen to stay reliable and strong without becoming thicker than around 3.5mm (Mary Rose arrow nock width) is a real challenge.

Very close to my guesstimate! Big Grin

I need the farm with space to enjoy something like that. One would be wasted just hanging on a wall here. These heavy prods reminding me of the super gun guy (1967ish) remarking the Israelis could be using truck springs to be chucking howitzer shells. Those prods you are making always brings that to mind from the thickness of spring stock.

Cheers
