As far as I know, the 1296 Paris Armourer's Ordinances are the earliest detailed description for making gambesons. Fabric coverings are filled with cotton and rags, with a minimum weight given, but not a thickness given.

Great discussion here,

A couple of effigies that might be of interest,

Ed W.--Not to get too far off the subject, but both effigies appear to be wearing helms made of mail--over a mail coif. Is this correct? Or am I mistaken? That's sure what it looks like to me. WTF?! ........McM

Hi Mark,

Yup, a separate cap of mail over the coif is pretty common in 13th C artwork and effigies. It's possible that there's a steel skull cap in between as well.

I thought it rather resembled a cloth or leather cap with mail sewn onto it. I suppose there could be a steel helm underneath it. At any rate, it gives me an idea for an old mail coif and an old arming cap I have laying around! Big Grin ....McM

Hah! Just finished it! One old, cheapo mail coif--one old, threadbare padded arming cap--a few cuts with the tin-snips--some linen thread and a needle--45 minutes--Presto, *New head-gear!* Cool...Looks just like the effigies! Thanks for posting those photos! Big Grin .....McM

I have a very difficult time posting photos, but it's on my list. I have plenty of things I want to show photos of, but my equipment and knowledge is sub-par to say the least. When my niece comes to visit, there will be a flood of all kinds of pics! Big Grin ...McM
