Can anyone help me with establishing the origin/history of a sword -double etched- with this writing on it --FELD ART REGT
PRINZ REGENT LUITPOLD V BAYERN (MAGDBY) NO 4.
I am unable to post pictures.

The etching is translated: "Field Artillery Regiment Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria" not sure about "Magdby" or no. 4.
Prince Luitpold ruled Bavaria from 1886-1912. As a young man, he was an officer in an Bavarian artillery regiment. I don't know if he served in the same regiment that later was named for him.
Hope that at least gets you started.

The writing stands for "Feldartillerie-Regiment Prinz-Regent Luitpold von Bayern (Magdeburgisches) Nr. 4" which the unit was named from 1st of September 1897 (and stationed at Magdeburg), when it was still part of the 4. Feldartillerie-Brigade.
The regiment became part of the 7. Feldartillerie-Brigade under the 7. Division from 1st of October 1899.
From the 16th of February 1917 the 7. Feldartillerie-Brigade became "Artillerie-Kommandeur" (ARKO) 7 until it was disbanded in 1919.

So your sword should at least be from between when the artillery regiment carried that name from 1897-1914.
How long during the war the regiment kept that name is more uncertain from what I could find on the net.
Many WW1 sources when up in smoke during WW2.
So since you don't have a picture, you mean double-edged (or double-etched) blade??
This "Faschinenmesser für die Artillerie" was in use in Bavaria from 1805-1892 and it is double-edged.

It clashes with the naming of the regiment first happening from 1897 (though old blades could still be issued?).
So it is most likely the "Faschinenmesser für die Artillerie M1892", though this is single-edged:

If you mean double-etched, perhaps it is an officers artillery saber?
Bayern had a military saber M1858.

The M1813 hussar saber was apparently modified in 1900 and became the "Artillerie Säbel für Mannschaften".

The M1813 saber is similar to my sword however the grip is rusted silver and the blade has decorative scroll on each side and the FELD ART REGT PRINZ REGENT LUITPOLD V BAYERN (MAGDBY) NO 4 decoratively inscribed on it.
