Hi! I know that a similar sword has been posted on a thread about Walloons, but I just needed a simple identification of the style of the sword for a project I am doing. How can I refer to the guard decoration; as repossé? Also, If anyone can tell me what the makers mark is, I would be very happy. I feel like it's Wundes, but it doesn't seem to match the reference exactly. Also, the hilt of my sword and several other swords are basically the same, yet the marks are different; why was that so?
If anyone has any ideas about the country of origin, that would be absolutely fantastic.
Sorry about my general lack of knowledge!

Hello Isabella,
That looks like the Wundes mark, but my reference books are back in California so I can't guarantee that it is!
The reason that this hilt type has many different blade and maker's stamps is that this design was used all over Europe during the last half of the 1600s and into the early 1700s, and the local smiths installed whatever blades they had in stock. You can find these with backsword, broadsword, and curved blades.
I think because of the pommel shape that the one you have shown is from the later 1600s - early 1700s.
Hope this has been some help.
