A friend of mine will be visiting Milan in a week, and wanted to know if anyone could recommend any museums there that would feature medieval weaponry?

Yes, two I'm aware of:
1. a collection within the historical museums, Castello Sforzesco.

2. Poldi Pezzoli museum, very close to Milan's main square, with the magnificent Duomo.
