In the process of remounting some armor, specifically mid to late 15th century Italian. Was wondering if there is any hard/fast or common sense rule for the location of the buckle vs. straps? Am asking primarily about the upper legs, and greaves. Examined many photos, both real and replica, without reaching a conclusion, seemed to be all very random. Am thinking of mounting buckles close to or directly on the plates inside the limbs, having a buckle (weight) at the end of a long strap doesn't make sense to me. The straps mounted outside the limbs would then have strap ends pointing forward for ease of pulling. Would probably do likewise for the arms.

Regards,
Dan

are you talking about etruscan greaves, 17th cent Indian or WW1 german snipers armour?

It makes a huge difference, there are no hard and fast rules in a subject so wide and encompassing. Date and location will get you some more tailored responses.

Yours,

Griff
