I've recently put together another album that features the fine art of modern day basket-hilt making !
This time they are by the talented hand of maker Eljay Erickson !

Currently I've found 20 unique examples of his work, but this Gallery is far from complete as I know of several more that are floating about in collecting circles ! Also Eljay has several more in the works for this season, so I will be adding new examples as pictures become available !

Dave Wilson was kind enough to send me a few shots of his new beaknose Ribbon hilt, that Eljay made for him a few months back !
Since my album doesn't include but a couple of pics, showing only a couple of angles, I'll post them here for all to see ! (thanks David !)
Very nice piece .... Ribbon hilts always remind me of the tough "working class" sort of basket-hilted sword !
It will be interesting to see what Dave does in mounting this one, blade-wise ! (David has such good taste :-)

I've also been interested in a ribbon hilt for a while, and what to my wondering eye should appear at my door than Eljay's first ribbon-hilt creation! I don't have the hilt handy right now, so I don't have any stats to print, but I'll just say that this is a pretty serious piece of ordnance which fits my hand almost like a glove (or gauntlet, perhaps?) and feels like a lethal weapon in it's own right, even without a blade... that's not to say it's heavy, in fact I find it deceptively light (like most original ribbonhilts, it looks like a sheet of steel wrapped into the form of a basket with some piercings).
No word on a blade... yet... stay tuned for more info!

Thomas or David do you have any photos of the antique ribbon hilt that E.B. Erickson copied? Or at least any that are similar? I didn't see the beak the first time i looked at the pic but now I see it! Those are pretty rare aren't they? Not just the ribbon, but the beaknose variety

Hi Adam
I've looked thru my reference books but so far have not found one that closely resembles this one,
at least in terms of its piercing ? (I'll post up some similar styled examples later).
The pommel, with slotted guard inserts, is an early form of these styled hilts !
Beaknose Ribbons are common enough, as I've noticed many an example thru the years !
(although I don't pretend to know what the ratio is for beaks vs. non-beaks ?)
It's a very cool hilt, this one of Eljays ....
I've got a ribbon project lined up with him, too ! (something with a nice broad curving blade, to boot :-)

One more for the list ....
Jeff Demetrick was kind enough to send me this shot of his Dussage, that Eljay made back in c. 1995-96
(At least that's the date Jeff recalls Eljay telling him it was made, as he purchased it in 1997)
* This was one of about 4 pieces, by Eljay, that had been artifically aged by some shady character(s), and passed off as an original. ......
It certainly looks genuine, eh ! That's why honest guys like Eljay wanted to walk away from doing this kind of work .... must be very frustrating seeing this sort of thing happen with your work !

Yup, as soon as I saw it I said "Nathan would luv this puppy" ( heck, I luv it too :-)
I forgot to mention in my edit .....
Eljay told me that his makers marks had been ground off some of these hilts, in an obvious attempt to deceive, as well as the other distressing bits they did to make them look older than they were ! So he now tends to build in his own little personal quirks (like the reversed S type thing on some of his Scot hilts) so he can help combat this sort of crap !
(making it easier to identify, etc!)

Jeff Demetrick had also included this photo, along with the dussage !
The basket-hilt backsword on the right (B), c. 17th century, is an antique piece that used to belong to Eljay !
Eljay had picked up this piece sometime in the 70's and replaced the grip !
I'd guess that Jeff purchased this one from Culloden House Antiques , as the pic layout looks like theirs ?

In conversation with Eljay this morning he gave me a bit of information about a few of these swords we've been discussing here ........
He writes:
"On Dave's ribbon hilt: you won't find a photo like that one. Two reasons:
1. It was modeled after a very unique antique that I worked on in the early 90s.
2. I couldn't remember exactly what the piercing was like, just that it was reminiscent of the SW11!
I'd like to someday do a closer repro of the antique, as it was a very small hilt, with very small piercings, and you could barely squeeze your hand in. However, once in there was plenty of room. It was literally a lot like a gauntlet.
On my stuff that has been aged and my signature removed: you should probably let everyone know that the first 3 at the top of the page fall into that category. Sort of a collector's alert thing.
On Jeff's English basket: that's one of the antiques I wish I hadn't sold. It's very light and nicely balanced.
The hilt retains traces of engraving to most members, in spite of the pitting. The blade is signed "Clemens Henckels". The only reason I sold it was that I had a very similar one in slightly better condition, with a Ferara blade, and I didn't think I really needed two swords that were that were so much alike! Oh well."
