Does anyone have a good idea as to whether these are just scarves/identifying cloth bands affixed to the helms shown or if they represent some sort of cloth binding wound around the helm, as is sometimes seen with eastern turban helms? There seems to be no method to secure them to the metal, which makes me thing they may just be decorative cloths, possibly used for identification, secured with a single wrap or some sort of tie.

It's one of the earliest depictions of medieval helmet crests, and how these scarves or mantles would be attached is pure guess-work. I suppose you could secure it with some small ties running through paired holes in the helmet.
