Hello!
here are my new katzbalgers forged upon wish of a customer.
Width of the blade: 50 mm, length: 62 cm, weight: 1.3 kg.

Ah, Katzbalgers, I love those things. Especially when they are well crafted like these ones, well done, Mr Spilka! Your customer has some very nice taste!

Those are two good-looking swords.
I have what may be a dumb question about Katzbalgers. One would think that with such a sword, stabbing would be on the agenda. But most that I've seen have rounded tips, some so round that thrusting is completely ruled out. There are other designs, like many gladii, which were mainly thrusters, but which could cut quite well.
Is there something about the blade geometry of katzbalgers that contraindicates stabbing?

I've wondered about this too. Clearly these Katzbalger are cutting blades. You might think a short cut & thrust blade would be a better all around option for use in a tight pike or other staff weapon formation. Perhaps a small type XVIII sword? But perhaps the Katzbalger really was not meant for the close formation fight where room to maneuver a blade is limited. Perhaps this sword is really a last ditch blade should the pike formation be scattered? Also might be useful for the pursuit of a fleeing enemy? I would think if a short thrusting blade was wanted the landsknechts would have armed themselves accordingly. Although the Katznalger might have adequate thrusting capabilting against soft targets such as face and hands. BTW these Katzbalgers are really beautiful pieces.

Most Landsknecht and Confederate mercenaries had little or no armor, so stabbing would not be so difficult if the enemy is only wearing several layers of clothing.

Thank you guys for your reactions! I´m glad I had the opportunity to make these 2 pieces and could show you something new from my smithy. Both katzbalgers´ve become part of our standard catalogue.

I´m just about to finish another set for Landsknechts (based on original from Rothenburg museum with few changes upon customer´s request) so wanted to share it. Overall length 77 cm, blade width 5 cm, weight 1.34 kg, PoB 9.5 cm.
