I'll be in Paris in early September for a wedding and I'm putting together an itinerary of medieval history sites to visit, specifically ones related to arms and armor. A quick search has turned up the Musee de L'Armee as the most famous armor collection in Paris: http://www.musee-armee.fr/accueil.html, and the Cluny museum as the place to see medieval artwork: http://www.musee-moyenage.fr/, but I'm wondering if I get get some tips from sources on the ground in France as to what a google search might miss.

I'm also looking to tour a medieval castle while I'm there. Not a Renaissance or post-Renaissance palace (I know there are a lot of those around the city), but a real fighting fortress fortified for war. My search has I've turned up the Blandy-les-Tours and Chateau de Pierrefonds, but these are reconstructions, not originals. Any other options close to Paris?

Thanks

You've hit the two most relevant museums for arms and armour. The Cluny has a small but excellent collection of armour and pavises that should not be dismissed. The art and architectural installations are awe inspiring! Plan a full day there.

The Musee de Armee is vast. Unless your interests are purely, rigidly medieval - plan two full days there. And many large flash cards for your camera...

I don't know of any medieval castles near Paris that were not hideously adulterated or slighted in the centuries after they were out of use. Perhaps some one else has a better idea. If you have time and rent a car, a long day trip to Guedelon Castle is well worthwhile. http://www.guedelon.fr/en/

Thank you Kel. I'll plan a full day for each of the museums on your recommendation.

Any more recs are very welcome.

Here are a couple sites you may find interesting:

http://goparis.about.com/b/2013/07/06/in-focu...-paris.htm

this lists most of Paris museums, but that said, visit Musée National de la Marine, it's a bit later, but if you have any interest in maritime history, very good. Musée de l'Armée, Château de Vincennes this is just outside of Paris. Hope these help!
