Maybe this is the wrong subforum, if indeed it is, I humbly apologise to the moderators.
Does anybody in EU make riveted chain mail? All that I have found is imported indian/pakistanian riveted maille.
NB not aluminium but steel or iron.
Thanks!
Boris

Yes, it was in the wrong sub-forum and has been moved. The Marketplace is not for seeking any kind of advice, only for sales transactions between non-industry craftsmen individuals.

Augusto, the Zeughaus does not produce their own maille, this is the typical imported stuff from India.

Boris, did you want to buy a euroeean made maille or get pointers on making your own? Or a bit of both?
From what historical period and variant, flat rings or round and with or without alternating solids?

At that low price this has to be GDFB mailles they're selling. I also recognise the photos of the GDFB tools. Nothing wrong with GDFB of course which I like a lot, but it's not all hand made in europe.
Are these perhaps GDFB mailles that have been tailored? Some I've seen that have been turned out very nice indeed.
Europeean hand made mailles (from pre-drawn wire most likely so not all hand made perhaps but close enough) would run at something like €3.000-6.000 depending on size and ring type. Probably add another zero if it also has authentic hand made solids and hand drawn from wrought iron wire rather than steel. But I don't know if anyone really makes these, in europe or outside it to sell. Hard to make a living on I mean. If anyone does make them I'd very much like to know.
The manufacturer Ben listed above that actuallay makes hand made mailles charges "300 Eur for each kilo", a reasonably sized haubergon would be around 10 kg, so 3.000 euro. Very reasonably priced for what you get.
I'm just guessing but probably this is made from pre-drawn steel wire with low enough carbon content to border on being iron in the traditional sense. Probably it's all riveted and no hand made solids, or solids made from industrial washers like everybody making and selling maille uses today, or they'd specify that very clearly since it's a lot of extra work and unique on the market.
The result makes for a very nice maille without the uniform shape ring look.
My friend Niclas makes the same type of maille from iron carbon level steel wire, though I think he charges more but if anyone's interested I can ask him for a quote.
I like that gambeson.pl has some mailles made from 1.2 mm wire thickness rings (just like my friend does) as seen in Gjermundbu and other mailles. Most we see mass produced are 1.5 or even 2 mm wire and can only emulate the very thickest ring types used historically.

Hi Johan, no I do not plan on making my own maille, but with prices you mentioned it is not hard to see why everyone resorts to cheap indian made maille. I reenact 15.ct Condottiero, so i was thinking voiders and chain skirt underneath milanese plate, maybe even shoe coverings.
Incidentally, there are also some russians that make their own armour, but their websites are in russian only.

Most of the mail offered by gambeson.pl is a bit too light for my taste. While 1.2 mm wire is more than sufficient for mail with a smaller internal diameter (i.e 6 mm), it is quite thin when used for mail with an internal diameter of 10 mm. Such light mail would have not been preferably used as a standalone armour but in conjuction with plate armour.
Note that gambeson.pl also has mail haubergeons with 8 mm/1.2 mm mail. But even that is a bit too light in my opinion.

You could take a look here. I haven't seen it in person, but from what I've heard it's okay enough.

Hmm - it is cheap! - especially if you pre-pay (which makes me a little wary). Have you dealt with them before or do you know anyone who can/has recommended them?

Well as the owner of Cap-a-pie, I can honestly say our maille, tools and other things are not made by GDFB, we have a totally different supplier The tools are fairly generic anyway in terms of shape.
We also have a combination of maille items made here in the UK and also abroad, it's the only way to stay competitive I'm afraid. Approximately two year waiting list for tailoring though. One of the many things we do get involved with is direct work with the manufacturers of the rings, I'm currently working on a new design incorporating the look and feel of Authentic Maille, yes watershed included. Being well aware that the current manufacturing process has a number of issues with it.
We are also working on a number of other projects such as ventail with tailored chin section to provide a better fit on a coif as well as maille brayettes for the gothic style armour. All this in the UK by yours truly with the help of some very knowledgeable folk in a particular museum in London.
Certainly good to see so much interest in maille as of late, especially the desire to get closer to the originals. Please keep it up as it certainly makes the sleepless nights I have trying to figure things out seem worth it
