I saw the "show us your shields" thread and was wondering if anyone could suggest a place to purchase a 14th cent heater or pavise shield made of linden would and as historically accurate as possible. thanksCheers,
What is your budget for this? People make plywood shields rimmed with dog chew toy rawhide and find it expensive and a lot of work. A couple years back Thomas Hayman tried to sell a very well crafted pavise, appropriately constructed for the 15thC for something like 175 pounds and had trouble finding a buyer. That might have paid him a pound an hour after material cost.
The woodwork is simple but appropriate glue has to be used as well as numerous layers of gesso over canvas for a pavise and rawhide for heater. Material cost and labour make reproductions of period shields prohibitive.
