Yes, the crazy crests can be credited to the Medieval Total War games. (Teutonic Campaign)
(BTW, I HIGHLY recommend the total war games. They are bloody brilliant)
And Mr Janus, yes, that is a Norman. I rather like it. Yes, we here at myArmoury have a rather skewed view of DSA.
This is my first purchase by them, and likely not to be the last. I find their work is extremely attractive, and they are a very responsive company. The Norman is a tad heavy. But it isn't a bad handler by any means.

if you google teutonic knight a fair number of images show that crest.. and i think christopher morgan of the New varangian guard has a photo of one specimen called the Von Prankh helm im not sure if its actually a helm of the teutonic knights. but it shows most likely where medieval 2 got their inspiration from
its shown in this thread about the teutonic knight helm http://www.myArmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=11068

IMO that's one of the things that made it really popular imagery.
The Von Prankh helm in that thread has been identified as a Jousting Helm, and hasn't been attributed to the Teutonic Knights in any way other than the fact that it's German.
