I am looking for better info about the dating of this belt found at Nydam? Hope someone can get me better info, fotos or measurments. It is shown with a horse belt construction so maybe it is a horse belt?

Hi Magin,

that's definitely a horse harness and from the finding place and the style, I would guess it's period C1b (early 3rd century). I think it's from the Illerup A offering (which is the biggest one at this site). In most sacrificial bogs, there are several different offerings, dating from different times. I've loaned someone my book on Illerup (Jørgen Ilkjær: Illerup Ådal -Et arkeologisk tryllespejl, Moesgard 2000), so I can't give you more specific information now.
If you get to a university library, the archeologic department will certainly have the volumes of the Illerup monography.

Best regards,

Till

I know this is probably some sort of heresy,,but at *first* glance..that horse harness looks like it's decorated with roman cingulum plates ? Could someone at the time came across a whole lot of old roman cingulum militaire in an abandoned workshop somewhere and used them to decorate his horse harness?? Just a foolish thought, I suppose Happy It'd be interesting to get some detailed photos of the plates Happy

Click on the link next to Sasa http://www.tforum.info/forum/index.php?showtopic=10502 There's a few pages of bog finds, mainly swords, but on the second page are a couple of belts.
