Not really that great in terms of accurate arms and armor, but for those of you out there (like me) that are obsessed with Nordic-themed stuff or Conan-ish fantasy, this will be absolutely awesome.

A bit off topic isn't it? Wink

With a horned helmet the theme seems to be closer to Conan than any nordic culture I know.
That is the advantage of games like that, they can take their inspiration from all kinds of sources.

I hope the fighting style is a little bit more life like this time, it was a little stiff in part IV.
They promised that players would be able to use their hands a bit more independently, sounds like a good start.

Btw. I just love that they kept the theme music from Morrowind and Oblivion. Happy

Or use a Xbox 360. Razz

Games like that tend to be very dangerous for guys like us with swords hanging on the wall. Wink

The main draw of the last two games for me though was the user-created content, which requires the PC version. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that many modders frequent this site for the reference photos...

Looking forward to this one as well and hoping that it will be better than the last one plot-wise (Oblivion got dull quickly with all the portal hopping).

Skyrim looks very good..

I had Morrowind on PC and Oblivion on a console. Like David says, the community mods on PC make a big difference.

I don't know if any of you play a game called Mount & Blade? I mention it because the general control scheme is similar to Elder Scrolls but there's no magic and focuses instead on realistic-feeling horsed combat. I'm addicted to it.

There are some community mods replacing the generic (nord/steppe/med/west) medieval factions with real ones (byzantines, scots, ottomans, rus, etc) and modeling/texturing weapons and armor off of museum examples. Some of them come pretty close except for the old sling my greatsword across my back in a sheath thing!

I agree, the plot/environment of Morrowind was better IMO. In Oblivion I just found myself being teleported to unlikely scenes of epic heroism over and over without really needing to do anything sans show up.

The ability for the player to ignore the main quest also resulted in NPCs apathetically notifying you the world had been invaded by the deepest layer of hell, asking you to fix that whenever you get around to it, then going back to selling you a pair of suede shoes or asking you to find their missing grocery list. Awkward.

I never played Morrowind but I hear the settings were really fantastical compared to Oblivion. I hope, unlike many other folks, that Skyrim keeps the more normal geographical settings like Oblivion.

I completely agree. I was actually a little disappointed in the photos because of the architecture. I was hoping for something more authentic. Hopefully the natural environments will be good at least.

The settings vary racially more so than game to game. Morrowind was set in an Elf nation so naturally the architecture was fantastical. In both Morrowind and oblivion the Imperials lived in semi-realistic stone structures and wore inaccurate-yet-feasible Romanesque armor.

Skyrim is where the "Nords" are from and they're less magical than elves but not quite as mundane as the Empire, so I'd expect it to be somewhere in between.

They released a live action trailer a couple of days ago, which looks rather sweet to my eyes:

And here's a capture of the trailer to make this more "on topic". Not the worst fantasy sword I've seen lately, although a slightly different pommel design might have made it even better.

But, yes, it's a back scabbard... Wink

Pre-ordered. Definately looking forward to this one. So much better than the run of the mill FPS or manga-inspired fantasy stuff out there. Happy

I've been looking forward to Skyrim for months, ever since they announced it. I played both Morrowind and Oblivion and loved them. I always get it for PC so that I can mod. One of the best parts of the game, to me, is being able to set my character up with the most realistic-looking arms and armor without giving up the better stats of the more fantastical stuff.
