I recently acquired several interesting swords and knives, including a couple 17th Century swords. (At least I think so) In one of the deals, this one was thrown in. I was thinking of selling it, but I haven't a clue what it is except it looks very Prussian or German. It is a heavy dragoon style or palache. Maybe someone can assist. I am assuming its a reproduction, since it shows little age patina, but it is of very ornate design with a cypher and eagle, and I cannot find a maker. Any help would be of great interest and service to me. Worried
Thank you

Doug

Hello Douglas,
I took a look at your photos, and I think you're right to think that this is a repro. However, it's a lot better repro than others of this type that I've seen, and there's an outside chance that it could be an overcleaned original. Without seeing it in the flesh I can't say for sure. Here's what makes me think repro: the cypher etching method (wide, deep lines) isn't one I've seen before on antiques. Some of the brass looks like it has worn plating. Overall style, while good, just doesn't look quite right.

Hope this is of some help! --ElJay

I'd certainly be proud to own it! For the sake of comparison, here are two images showing the FR cypher. The full hilt shot is of an original Prussian hanger and the detail is from an antiqued Windlass Steelcrafts Prussian hanger.

El Jay and Sean, thanks very much, most helpful. El Jay's assessment fits my feeling and it is helpful to receive the feedback. Funny thing, 5 years ago I would of hands down stated that I could tell the difference betwen repro and original. The craft is getting better and better, and I am more content with my ignorance, since I learn better that way.

thanks again
