I recently picked up some spear heads from MRL that were half priced. I wanted to get some spear poles and found some poles that work very well at our local Menards. These are 6ft long round ash poles, and measure roughly 1 1/4" inch. They are even angled on one end to fit the spear heads.
These are officially known as "Goldblatt Fresno Extension handles" and you find them in the concrete tool section of most building supply centers. I picked up a couple today, on sale, for $12 each. These were not the Goldblatt brand, but they look very good. I have included a couple of shots.
Edit.. I do sand off the cheapie varnish on these poles, then refinish with a wood stain.
One of the pictures shows a finished spear, and another is a close-up of the pole head.

Great info Ron! Looks like I'm making a trip to the hardware store this weekend.
