|
|
Hello,
leafing through "The Archaeology of Weapons", I stumbled across the dagger shown below. I have only seen one dagger with a similar pommel, it is shown in the online archives of the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin. Unfortunately this piece is not on display.
Does anyone know any other examples in period art, are there any photos in any books, any measurements?
The blade in Oakeshott´s drawing seems very long, with a short fuller. Oakeshott describs the blade as "long, slender and acutely tapering, with two edges". The pommel is lozenge-shaped, with a small lug protruding on each side, and with two chevrons and a fleur de lys depicted on it.
Any further information on this kind of dagger would be very welcome.
Thank you very much.
Mark

I have no information about this, but I have to second the request for more info if there is such. Very interesting dagger and one of the first daggers to take my fancy (I'm not usually into them as much as swords).

The only other piece of information I could find myself are some dimensions of the dagger in the collection of the Historisches Museum in Berlin.
If you go to the homepage of the museum, click on "Sammlungen" and choose "Objekte", and then insert "Dolch" in the text field "Objekte", the dagger is on the second page of the results. All the steel parts are very very rusty, but the bronze pommel looks fine, with a floral motiv on on side.
The stats of this dagger are: Blade width 2,8cm, overall length 26,9 cm, blade length 21,9 cm, weight 120 g.
Regards,
Mark

Here are some pictures taken from the database of the DHM Berlin. I have also attached a picture of another dagger with a all bronze hilt, but also with small lugs on the "pommel". It is also dated to the 14th century.
