different sources tell me different things, the earliest being the feared wikipedia telling me that they were around in england since 1011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettle_hat
any takes on this?

The Lewis Chessmen:

It's a chess set dating from the 12th century. I believe the piece Mr. Seago is referring to is this one:
