This is something we're thinking about getting in to. This is basic but we can certainly spruce it up. We plan to add black leather around the edges. These are something for Ren Faire Costumes and for display. I don't plan to make them SCA certified at this time, but maybe in the future.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sonny

The shield looks very interesting and appears to have nice dimensions. Could you describe the materials used? The lion rampant appears to be applied in some manner, how did you manage this? A photograph of the back would be great.

Please excuse all the questions, the heater looks really Cool!

Wood shield with custom dyed leather overwrap.
We plan to add padding for the arm and leather around the edges.

If these are to be for display/costume use, I personally wouldn't edge them; they'll look better without. Also, unless they're just temporary, get rid of the nuts-and-bolts on the enarmes and use rivets instead. Other than that, I like it. Happy

This was just a prototype. We plan to use rivets for production pieces.

SCA shields are way overbuilt compared to period shields I think from what I have read in past Topic post here on " myArmoury " because no one enjoys having to buy a new shield after just one battle. ( I'm somewhat guessing here ).

Same thing could be said of 14 or 12 gauge steel plate for helms !?

My point being that one could make a display shield functional in the sense that in period it would have been considered functional but very disposable/expendable but still a " good Shield " as long as it was strong enough for that one battle: A true fighting shield needs to be agile and not so heavy as to tire one out too fast.

So it could be display only in the modern context that it wouldn't be durable enough for SCA use but would be robust enough for period fighting.

So if edged, I think rawhide would actually do much to make it much more robust than leather.

All depends on the design goal:
1) Overbuilt sports use.
or
2) Period fighting weight/construction.
or
3) Decorative only.

Looks nice though. Wink Big Grin
