Hello Friends,
On another thread, I had mentioned that part of my "sword budget" for this year had gone toward getting a scabbard made by Art Elwell at http://www.a-work-of-art.net for my Albion Acre type XII. Nathan had expressed interest in seeing some pictures when it was completed. Well, I picked up my sword and scabbard this weekend and Art was good enough to snap some photos to share with you. My Acre has the oxblood grip and the scabbard has a wood core lined with shaved sheepskin and covered with black pig skin. The metalwork is nickel silver with a sterling silver decorative element at the top of the throat and chape. This is Art's "basic" model and goes for $135 - quite a good deal IMO. Art can also do "fancier" versions with lockets, etching, etc.
The leather is sewn up the back and goes straight up the middle. The seams on the metalwork are not exactly centered, but that is why they are on the back. The fit is nice and tight - quite tight for about the first half inch when drawing the sword and the last half inch when inserting it into the scabbard. There is NO way it will fall out if tipped upside down and cannot be easily yanked out by the overly curious. Art had quoted me 3 months (90 days) for the project, but it actually took a little over 5 months in the end.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
And without further ado, here are the pics (I hope).
Regards,
Mike

First response: for $135 that's a hell of a deal.
Second: I saw many of Art's pieces at the Schola St. George event, and that guy really does some wonderful work. His lines are very crisp and everything is nicely executed. I own a scabbard of his, and despite him being quick to point out that it's his early work, I see absolutely no flaws of bad workmanship in it at all.
Nice looking kit there.
( by the way, you can put three attachments per post on this forum...)

Hi Nathan,
Thanks for the reply. Now you tell me about three attachments per post...haha.
I am a very happy camper!
Art is very modest about his work and I suggested that he contact you about putting up a gallery for his portfolio of past work (ala Christian Fletcher's). Hope he does.
Regards,
Mike

Art Elwell was one of the first to make quality scabbards, and ,as far as I'm concerned, he's still the best -- even with all the great stuff that CF, Albion and Russ Ellis provide

Nice looking ensemble Mike. Art is indeed a gentlemen, and a pleasure to deal with.
