Hi all,

Recently a few people have approached me and asked why their names were rejected when they tried to register for accounts on the NYHFA forums. They asked if I had blacklisted them.

No one is blacklisted, or has ever been blacklisted, or even banned for that matter.

We shut down the forums to registration by adding "*" (a wild card character) as a disallowed name, thereby banning all names. We have an older forum without the latest bells and whistles, and it was the only way to stop the 10+ spam accounds PER DAY that I was getting. I have no idea why so many people in Nigeria want to join the NYHFA forums. Happy

So if you've recently, or not so recently, tried to make an account, that's why it wouldn't let you. If you want to join, just email me at nyhfa.info at gmail.com and I'll set you up.

Sorry for any misunderstandings.

I did the registration without any problems.
I saw the video.
Michael, in your hands, the sword of Brescia seems a divine punishment. Eek!
Lethal sword apparently.
Ciao

Because they can. Wink Evil ( Evil Not you, them ! ).

Really liked the " ViagrraaCialiss " ( deliberately misspelled here by me ) as the new " members " name !

I guess this stuff continues because even if one person in 100,000 goes to the spam site and buys something it's worth it to them ! Anyway, off Topic maybe but if people dislike spam so much they should never respond and give them money: If it didn't work there would be no spam !

You can easily give up your freedom. You have to fight hard to get it back!

Michael-

myArmoury.com gets approximately 140 attempted spammer registrations each day. I've coded numerous things to prevent these spammers from creating accounts on this site, but a few still get through. It's an uphill battle. I'm a developer and this site benefits from my knowledge and expertise. Even with that, it still takes a tremendous amount of my time to deal with it (one of the many things I do behind the scenes that nobody really knows about). I wouldn't want to run a site on the 'net without having access to a developer to create customized solutions to avoid these problems.

Hi Nathan,
140! Wow. What would be nice is a program that automatically deletes all unactivted accounts at the end of every day. Do you have anything like that?

btw...I locked down the forums again, so if anyone wants an account, email or pm me.

Hi Mike,

You should talk to Roger (Siggs) about this. He set us up with the current Selohaar Forum and while the number of spam users isn't zero, it's not 10 a day. I'd say on average about 5-7 per week get through. Generally, they come in batches of two or three, so it's easy to select all and consign them to oblivion.

Best,

CHT

Hi Christian,

I spoke to Roger briefly, but he wasn't able to help in my circumstances.

The perfect thing would be a function to clean out all non-activated accounts automatically. Anyone know if that's possible?

It's possible and not difficult, but you need to be a programmer to modify the coebase of your forum.
