I just received my brand new custom type Y viking sword from Michael Pikula. He was kind enough to hand deliver it to me yesterday! (He was visiting friends near me) I can't say how perfect this piece is. Michael Pikula is incredibly talented at swordmaking! The feel of this sword is amazing. It's fast as a whip and still feels like it could break a shield! The finish on the blade is like silk. The termination of the fuller is so subtle it hurts, both sides too! The 2 part type Y is a favorite of mine. I have had an image of one that I got somewhere online a few years ago that I have been wanting to get reproduced since I saw it. Michael's talent has really captured what I wanted from this repro. Anyone who is in the market for a new custom and isn't on Michael's waiting list should give him serious consideration as the talent he displays on this piece is truly special. I'm attaching photos of the sword and the inspiration. Here are the stats:

Really impressive sword and having one of his spear heads that is flawless in every way, it's easy for me to believe how good it is. ( A fact hard to not know here considering how often I've mentioned it lately as well as a spear head by Michael being a Donation Prize for our fund drive ..... yes, I am shameless in highjacking this thread of a second.   ).
When I see an exceptional maker struggling because of the economy and deserving being better know I am very motivated to encourage others to get his work.  So, forgive me if I go a little overboard and can't resist all of the above positive comments.
You can easily give up your freedom. You have to fight hard to get it back!

Tim,
Congratulations on a fine sword. That's one I didn't care for in excavated form, but now that I see it brought back to life by a talented smith I like it very much. The pommel design gives the sword a very bold and imposing appearance, now you need an equally impressivescabbard to house it.

Very, very nice work! This is not the type of sword you see most often - but it somehow manages to look simple, elegant and deadly all at once.

Tim, I really like it was well. Particularly the shape of the grip, it matches the lines of the sword exceptionally well.

Great looking sword. Michael does some great work. Type Y is an excellent choice also. I haven't seen many replicas of them if any. Clearly from looking at this one there should be more out there.

That's a seriously nice sword! Congratulations! It's a type that is rarely reproduced, but at the same time, it immediately looked "right".

Thanks for all the comments! I think it's more fun to get rarely seen things made by custom makers....I happen to like the oddballs too! If I were in the market for a type H or type R I would buy an Albion! Again, I can't say how pleased I am with this sword or what a pleasure Michael is to work with.
Patrick- Too true about the scabbard, but I just got an email form Brian of DBK that his queue is not open until next JUNE! Guess the scabbard will have to wait.......
