|
|
Hi All,
Would anyone here have pics of Bronze Age scabbard fittings (mid- to late- BA if it helps)? I am particularly keen on finding some pics of chapes. I thought I had seen something on the evolution of the chape before, beginning with a fairly "prosaic" serpent head motif and ending with a much more abstract representation of the same. Now I can't find anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

This incredibly well preserved scabbard is from around 1300 BC, so it is a bit early for your interest. It is nice, though!
All leather and wood is intact.
It is possible to see each stich in the seam on the backside.
Looks like it could have beeen made within the last century.
The original is kept in the store room of the Historical Musem in Stockholm.

Thanks Peter,
That is an amazingly preserved scabbard! I'm guessing it was a bog-find? The only other one I've been able to find is the one attached below, which is in the British Museum (I believe it can also be seen in Pryor's "Britain BC").
I suppose I should have remarked on the fact that I am primarily interested in Northern/Western European scabbards-- your pic fits in beautifully.
Thanks again!
David
