I greeted The Children of Hurin with a resounding, "Meh." Mainly because it was depressing, but also because it was already done in The Silmarillion, where it was also depressing. However, I am almost giddy over the impending release of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun. It's been far too long since I had some new epic poetry to sink my teeth into.

Anyone else looking forward to this? Big Grin

I sure am!

I recognised most text of the CoH from the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales. This should be all new, and it's a story I quite like too.

I am sure looking forward to it. Big Grin

There is a really good book by an Aussie writer who expanded the fall of Gondolin section of Sillmarilion. Unsurprisingly it's called "The Fall of Gondolin" Davith someone, highly recomend it.

Once again, if it wasn't for this site, I might as well be living in a cave... A mighty thank-you, Mr. Barris, for bringing this new work to my attention!

I attempted the Silmarillion some time ago, and simply did not have the patience for it. For me, the new presentation of CoH made the whole thing very readable, very enjoyable, and prompted me to dive back into the Silmarillion with new appreciation. I always enjoyed aspects of Beowulf, as well, but I only fell in love with that one until I read Haney's translation of it. Maybe I'm more influenced by presentation and packaging than I'd like to admit.

Anyhow, the lays of Sigurd and Gudrun have always been interesting to me, but I'm betting Tolkien's adaptation will fan that flame. So... Yep. Excited now!!! Thanks again!
